What I would like to find out is the cost savings of zero or minimal growth for the regional population. If just increasing densities saves $11.2 billion imagine the savings of building no new infrastructure. I know that everyone will tell you that growth is good or that we can’t stop growth but how are we benefiting from it?
More jobs? – but those are taken up by new residents.
More taxes collected by the city? – but residents in larger cities pay higher taxes than those in smaller towns.
More stores? – does it help to have 5 Honda dealers instead of 2? Are we better off with double the number of shoe stores or furniture stores?
Most people recognize that growth must stop someday. We should be discussing the population limit based on our desires and the physical limitations (mostly water in southern Alberta). Olny when we know the end point should argue over the means to get there.
